Weather- Located inside of twenty degrees from the equator, St. Thomas' weather is characterized by lots of sun and warm Caribbean breezes. St. Thomas weather is truly tropical - an annual average temperature in the mid/high eighties varies little between seasons, keeping winter months hot and sunny though slightly less humid than summer. Important to note is that even though it may rain, the rain usually only lasts about 10/15 minutes and the sun quickly comes back out.  It is highly unlikely that rain would last an entire day. 

Location- We are located in the heart of St. Thomas’s historic district, just steps from Main Street and the Waterfront, the island’s main shopping areas.  We are just a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the airport and are about 10-15 minutes away from the nearest beach (Magen’s Bay).We are a 5 minute walk away from the St. John ferry dock and about a leisurely 15-20 minute walk from the Tortola Ferry dock.

Steps- Given St. Thomas’ mountainous makeup, it is almost impossible to avoid having to navigate stairs.  They are a part of our daily living here.  Our hotel is not equipped with an elevator, however, you may request a room on one of our lower levels.  If you are unsure about whether or not you can handle our stairs, please call us before reserving your room online.

How to get to us from the airport- As of a few year ago, it is illegal for hotels to pick their guests up from the airport.  Unless you plan to rent a car, you’ll have to take a taxi to us.  Once you get your bags, just tell the taxi driver that you’re going to the Bunker Hill Hotel.  They all know where we are located and trip will cost you about $9 per person, plus $2 per bag. 

Taxis- Taxi fare can add up, so it’s best to plan your outings with that knowledge.  While it is more expensive to take a taxi vs. rent a car, it is still more convenient, less hassle, and allows you to take in views you would otherwise miss if you were driving. 

Fares can run from around $7 to $10 per person depending on where you’re going.  There’s no such thing as splitting a cab as there is no meter and all fares are charged on a per person basis.  It is a good idea to ask how much the fare would be for a trip in advance so there’s no sticker shock at the end of your ride. 

Car rentals- If you can drive here on St. Thomas, you can drive anywhere in the world.  Here in the Virgin Islands we drive on the left.  If you don’t mind driving on the left on our very narrow streets which sometimes require you to either pull on the side or reverse so that either you or another car can pass, then you’ll be okay. 

 
Also, if you’re good with getting around with limited direction, that’s even better.  Most of our directions sound like this “Go up the steep hill and make the second left at the house with the yellow gate.  Make a sharp right, drive for about a mile and you’ll see it just past the gas station on the right”. We don’t know street names here and furthermore most streets aren’t even marked. 

Parking- We have very limited parking at the hotel, however most of our guests choose not to rent a car, so getting a spot is seldom a problem. 

Safety- Unfortunately there is crime everywhere you go, even here on tiny St. Thomas.  We are located in St. Thomas’ downtown area and using street smarts the same as you would in any large city is advisable. 

Island Congeniality- Here in the Virgin Islands manners pays dividends.  It is customary to greet your neighbors with a “good morning” or “good afternoon” or “good evening” or as we say, “good night”. 

Remember those sayings “Patience is a virtue” and “You get more bees with honey”?  Good, because you may need to put them in practice.  We operate on island time down here and unfortunately that could mean longer wait times for things.  Belligerent complaints will only get you more frustrated as it would unlikely result in faster/better service.  Take heart though, you’re in paradise!
